this week on tumblr: everyone realizes how much of a badass neville was all along

and maybe finally realizing that Snape was a complete asshole not a misunderstood man

Neville Longbottom: He woulda done it in 4 books

Also pointing out: Snape was an asshole to Neville because of his obsession with Lilly. He was pissed off Voldemort chose Harry rather than Neville.
Snape tortured two young boys because of an obsession with a dead, married woman.

Also: a dead married woman who turned him down when she was alive

A dead married woman who turned him down when she was alive because he went from being a supportive friend to a vicious asshole who joined a terrorist organization dedicated to eradicating her and she got fed the fuck up with his shit

#later he redeemed himselfy by#um#well#uh#hmm

I’m not going to comment on Neville Longbottom because seriously, Neville is incredible and we should all love him.  I mainly want to comment on what’s being said about Snape here.
I love seeing Snape hate on my dash because it shows me just how little people actually understood not only Snape’s character arc, but the story in general.  Contrary to popular belief, we’re never supposed to think Snape’s not an asshole.  I’ll let that sink in your minds a little bit before I rewrite that in a capslocked dramatic fashion.
WE.  ARE.  NEVER.  SUPPOSED.  TO THINK.  SNAPE.  IS NOT.  AN ASSHOLE.
Amazing concept, right?  That a character can perform heroic, brave deeds and still have major flaws.  Because whether or not Harry Potter fans want to admit it (or even J.K. Rowling herself wants to admit it), characters are not perfect demigods of our imaginations and in complete control of the way events unfold.  Things happen to them just as much as they make things happen, and guess what?  They’re not always going to react in perfectly rational ways.  Dumbledore hid very important shit from Harry that could have made his trials much easier to deal with, but never revealed it because of his own schemes as well as a mishandled desire to make Harry become a stronger person.  Ron walked away from his best friends because he was jealous.  Snape mishandled his attraction to Lily as well as mistreated his students because he’s a fucking asshole.  Characters.  Aren’t.  Perfect.
Fucking REVOLUTIONARY CONCEPT, I KNOW.
So instead of focusing on the parts that make Snape an asshole (because there’s plenty we have to work with on that), let’s talk about how Snape actually performed genuinely brave and heroic acts.
He tried to save Harry’s life during the first year multiple times, including during his first Quidditch map, and even confronting Professor Quirrel in the dead of night to make him fucking lay off of the kid.
He went out of his way (admittedly in a very dickish and unhelpful fashion) to try to help Harry fight off Voldemort in his mind.
He sent a patronus to Harry to help him in his time of need.
HE BECAME A FUCKING VILLAIN TO PROTECT HIS STUDENTS AND HARRY FROM THE DARK LORD.  I DON’T THINK PEOPLE GIVE SNAPE ENOUGH FUCKING CREDIT FOR THIS—DUMBLEDORE SAVED HIS FUCKING LIFE, AND HE KILLED HIM KNOWING FULL WELL NO ONE WOULD KNOW WHAT DUMBLEDORE ASKED HIM, KNOWING FULL FUCKING WELL THAT HE’D PROBABLY GO DOWN IN WIZARDING, NAY, ALL OF HISTORY AS ONE OF THE MOST NEFARIOUS, DOUBLE-CROSSING FIGURES OF ALL TIME, BUT HE DID IT ANYWAY FOR THE SAKE OF EVERYONE AT THE SCHOOL.
But no, let’s completely ignore every brave, heroic thing Snape ever did because it’s so much easier to pretend you’re some edgy, hip feminist by attacking him because he had a very creepy crush on Harry’s mother.
BUT HEY, HERE’S ANOTHER REVOLUTIONARY CONCEPT FOR ALL OF YOU TO CONSIDER.  SNAPE’S GROWTH AS A CHARACTER DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND LILY.
"GASP.  BUT WAIT!  ISN’T THAT WHAT TUMBLR KEEPS TELLING ME IS THE BASIS OF HIS CHARACTER!1!!/??/!1!?"
Oh, wouldn’t you know, Tumblr’s wrong about another thing, once again to let people feel powerful and better about themselves by calling out people’s favorites.
Let’s go back to Snape’s memories—not in the movie, because I’ll admit that could have been handled better, but in the novel.  When we begin Snape’s memories, it of course begins with Lily.  About how he loved her, how she ended up rejecting him because of his shitty attitude, how he later tried to failingly protect her (not knowing about Wormtail).  If Snape’s character arc was all about Lily, it would’ve best ended there, don’t you think?  Snape tried to protect her, he failed, and then he begrudgingly became a teacher at Hogwarts.  BUT HEY, THAT’S NOT WHERE THE MEMORY ENDS.  It keeps fucking going.  It talks about Snape teaching at Hogwarts, him eventually teaching Harry, his frustration with Harry, his going out of his way to initially begrudgingly help Harry, his concerns about Harry…is this sinking in yet?
IT’S ABOUT HARRY.  IT IS NOT ABOUT LILY.  SNAPE REDEEMS HIMSELF NOT BECAUSE HE HARBORS CREEPY ROMANTIC FEELINGS TOWARD LILY.  IT’S BECAUSE HE ENDS UP GENUINELY CARING ABOUT HARRY FUCKING POTTER.  SNAPE’S CHARACTER ARC BEGINS WITH LILY, AND ENDS WITH FUCKING ***HARRY***.
So PLEASE…stop misunderstanding one of the most emotionally complex character arcs in the entire Harry Potter series when Rowling made a pretty obvious point in canon of showing his heroism does not end and begin with Lily.  Jesus Fucking Christ.

I have never seen someone over react so hard ^

JK Rowling wrote a new Harry Potter story. This is not a drill people

J.K. Rowling just surprised Harry Potter fans everywhere in the best way possible.

The author, who is responsible for all seven mega-bestselling Harry Potter books, posted a new short story to her website Pottermore today. Titled “Dumbledore’s Army Reunites At Quidditch World Cup Final,” the tale is written in the form of a gossip column by Rita Skeeter, the delightfully poisonous character from the original series.

Though it reads as a newspaper column, the piece provides some clues as to what the main characters have been up to and is the first time we’ve seen the Harry Potter stars in grown up form since the series epilogue. Much has changed: Harry is now 34, he has a new scar on his cheek and is showing signs of grey hair.
